The Good Trouble Lives On: Voting Rights Vigil

Corner W. 5th Street & Avenue of the States

Chester Pennsylvania 19013

See map: Google Maps

The Good Trouble Lives On: Voting Rights Vigil is being held on Thursday, July 17, 2025 from 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the Be Woke. Vote Mural located at the corner of W 5th Street and Avenue of the States, Chester, PA. This vigil is part of a national day of nonviolent action, one of thousands marking the anniversary of Congressman John Lewis’ passing. We are hosting a Good Trouble Lives On Voting Vigil to demand that Congress protect our freedom to vote, stand up to authoritarianism, and fight back against attacks on our communities. Lewis, who was beaten badly on the March to Selma, Alabama, in 1965, spent the rest of his life, as a citizen and congressman, fighting for voting rights for all. He always said he made "good trouble."

The vigil will feature the Be Woke. Vote Mural by Alloyius Mcilwaine who states that the mural was a commission from Be Woke. Vote with the theme centered on getting people out to vote. He shared,

“Since women are always at the forefront of pushing forward progressive change, I wanted to paint a woman doing a call to action. I surrounded the woman with positive words and symbols, including my signature Kudoglyphs, which are positive affirmations in symbol form.  I filled the image with symbols that represent growth, energy, love, self-worth, building, and more.”

Join us to protect our freedom to vote. Bring a source of light to shine a “Light For Our Democracy”.

Our Good Trouble Lives On Coalition Partners for this Voting Vigil include:

  • Good Trouble Lives On

  • League of Women Voters

  • NAACP Legal Defense Fund

  • Delco Indivisible

  • Delaware County Voter Engagement Coalition

  • Delaware County Youth Voter Initiative

NOTE: Since this is an outdoor event, we will monitor the weather. If weather alerts are issued for the City of Chester, the vigil will be cancelled.

Please note: A core principle behind our Good Trouble Lives On actions is a commitment to nonviolence in all we do. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values. Roses of Resistance: A Twin City Vigil for Good Trouble

Roses of Resistance: A Twin City Vigil for Good Trouble

This candlelight vigil in downtown Lancaster, PA (The Red Rose City) will be held simultaneously and in solidarity with one in York, PA (The White Rose City) to call out injustice in the spirit of John Lewis.

Good Trouble Lives On is a national day of nonviolent action to respond to the attacks posed on our civil and human rights by the Trump administration and to remind them that in America, the power lies with the people.

On July 17, the anniversary of Congressman John Lewis’s passing, we’re taking action across the country to defend our democracy and carry forward his legacy of Good Trouble.

From voter suppression bills like the SAVE Act to the criminalization of protest, the Trump administration is launching a full-scale attack on our civil and human rights. But we know the truth: in America, the power lies with the people, and we’re rising to prove it.

This is more than a protest; it’s a moral reckoning. A continuation of the movement Lewis helped lead, and a new front in the struggle for freedom.

Please note: A core principle behind our Good Trouble Lives On actions is a commitment to nonviolence in all we do. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values.

Federal Money Matters Forum

Federal Money Matters Forum

Residents invited to ‘Federal Money Matters’ forum on July 16

A “Federal Money Matters” forum will present the needs of southern York County organizations, agencies and individuals to U.S. and PA legislators and to the public on Wednesday, July 16.

Approximately 15 representatives will appear in a panel 6:30-8:30 p.m. that evening to describe their views regarding the importance of support given to date by the federal government and the impact elimination or curtailment of those funds will have as defined by the now-adopted U.S. budget.

Sponsored by the League of Women Voters, the forum will be held in the auditorium of South Eastern Middle School (the former Kennard-Dale High School) at 375 Main Street, Fawn Grove.

The event is planned as a nonpartisan, non-adversarial activity. Expected to present information on the panel are representatives from regions of Delta, Stewartstown and Red Lion--school districts, human services agencies, senior centers, municipal engineering firms, parks programs, and other entities.

A parent will explain the impact Medicaid has upon her family, and Natalee Gunderson, president of York County Community Foundation, will describe the immense effect losing government funding will have on nonprofit agencies. Invited are United States Senators John Fetterman and David McCormick, as well as U.S. Representatives Scott Perry and Lloyd Smucker.

Since withdrawal of federal financial support could impact state governments, Pennsylvania legislators have also been invited, including Governor Josh Shapiro, Senator Kristin Phillips-Hill and Representatives Wendy Fink and Mike Jones.

Following the panel presentation and questions or remarks by elected officials, members of the public may ask questions or express views.

The League will conduct voter registration during the forum evening.

The League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania is proud to be nonpartisan, neither supporting nor opposing candidates or political parties at any level of government, but always working on vital issues of concern to members and the public. Its mission during the past 100 years is to “empower voters and defend democracy.”

More information on additional panelist still to come.

Overview of LWV Federal Judiciary System Study Town Hall

The League of Women Voters (LWV) of the United States is conducting a study of the Federal Judiciary System to develop a LWV position on the Federal Judiciary as an essential component of US democracy. On Friday, February 21, 2025 at Noon via Zoom the LWV of Central Delaware County will share with our members an overview of the study and how you can get involved in coming to consensus on the study questions.

The study's purpose includes, but is not limited to, addressing concerns and clarifying judicial accountability, transparency, independence, and ethics.  The scope addresses the Supreme Court as well as the other Article III federal courts.

This event will also review the League of Women Voters national study process which involves all levels of the LWV - national, state and local. The consensus study process is used in formulating positions and in taking action at the grassroots level makes the League unique and sets the League apart from other organizations and makes us a powerful force. Once local Leagues come to consensus these results are reported to the national League to formulate new policy which will be included in Impact on Issues: A Guide to Public Policy Positions. Those Public Policy Positions can be used by local Leagues to “Take Action”.

The virtual town hall is being coordinated through our Civic Education Committee and will be led by Jodine Mayberry, our Legislative Advocacy Chair who has a background in following federal cases as part of her career at Thomson Reuters' Westlaw.

This is a FREE event but to receive the Zoom link registration is required. To register CLICK HERE
